THE CUTOFF DATE GIRLS SOFTBALL IS 12/31/2020 FOR THE 2021 SEASON THE AGE OF THE PLAYER ON OR BEFORE 12/31/2020 DETERMINS THE PLAYERS LEAGUE AGE Penfield Little League Softball teams begin being formed in early March and are usually complete by the end of that month. The number of teams in a given level of play are entirely based on the number of registrations received and the number of volunteer managers who have committed. Even though team numbers are finalized by the end of March, we often have open roster spots well into April, so please continue registering. The age of your daughter is the first step in determining the appropriate level of play for your daughter. Majors softball is a true fastpitch softball game. Scores and standings are kept. Many teams include some modified softball players. All girls ages 11 & 12 (as of Dec 31, 2020) will be automatically placed on a majors team. If, after filling rosters with registered 11 & 12 year old's, there are additional roster spots available, we will begin to fill those slots with appropriate 10 year old's. The process for “playing up” includes a conversation with the previous year’s coach or travel coach about the players ability to play at the majors level. Minors softball is a modified version of fastpitch softball. Many pitchers are just beginning to learn, so we do not enforce walks at this level. After a batter walks, the coach comes in to pitch the rest of the at bat. All players ages 9 & 10 (as of Dec 31, 2020) will automatically be entered into this level of play. Per the message above, as 10 year old's get pulled up to majors, and the roster situation becomes clear, we will begin to add 8-year old players to a minors roster. This, again, will be based on talent level of the players based on conversations with a prior coach. Rookies softball is for any player age 5-8, though we expect many 8-year olds will be playing minors softball. Rookies is a base-to-base coach pitch game. It is ideal for those just learning the game.
